PROJECT 3: CAST A STEPPING STONE

Background

Opportunity is defined as “a set of circumstances making it possible to do something”. Through this work and the use of the multiple I hope to encourage the audience to question their own opportunities in life and the paths that have been created based on each. The one bronze door that comes off the wall signifies importance, however it was a choice to not make it the only one in the center to emphasize this idea of many possibilities from one. This also takes into account the aftermath of what is considered a "golden" opportunity and what kind of growth follows.

Process

We were first assigned to cast an object using the lost wax casting method shown above. Items that were to be encased in the mixture of plaster and sand needed to be wax or be able to burn out of the mold during the kiln firing. Wood is able to be burned out by the kiln so I then attached their gating system in wax. I made a silicone mold off of the same wooden door and then continued to cast resin doors of the same scale and style to create a uniform look to the piece. The installation of this work is modular and is able to be adjusted to the space it is in which creates a variety of layout options for the final product. I tested a few before settling on the final composition.
