This current body of work seeks to represent the idea of “Opportunity” and what that can be to others. While developing this work I reflected upon my own opportunities in life and where they had come from. I thought about what was considered an opportunity as well as if I had even recognized it as an opportunity at the time. Realizing that Opportunity is an organic thing that is subject to each individuals perceptions I sought to show and archive the opportunities of others. This process allows the audience to follow the same reflective process that I had undergone while creating something that could influence the thought processes of others who interact with the work.
The use of the door visual is to give a metaphorical connection between the concept and the physical object being interacted with. Doors are objects that can be considered the mundane and every day, not something that is necessarily precious making it a perfect juxtaposition to the precious opportunities that they hold within them. The small scale allows for more personal intimacy with each story and moment held within. The utilization of the multiple with little to no deviation provides an equal sense of significance to each participants response while still remaining anonymous to the viewer bringing a platform to those who might value their own opportunities as lesser than others.
This process brings the art creation process out of the traditional studio space and allows every participant to be an artist in the same sense of Joseph Beuys's theory that everyone is an artist in some manner. The work does not exist without the audience or social participation and rather than giving the audience something to only consume, they are asked to give back from their own experience. This work may not showcase the collective human experience with opportunity but will act as an ongoing work with the goal of capturing as much of it as possible.
